Three Mechanical Bosses must be defeated in order to progress once a player has reached Hard Mode and acquired adequate gear. These bosses all drop the otherwise-unavailable Hallowed Bars and special Souls that can be used to forge new gear and continue forward with your adventure. Each of these require different strategies and the difficulty is subjective between player to player. Some will skilfully destroy a boss on the first try, while others will make many attempts without success. In the event a guide cannot help you, it is likely you need to either farm for better gear, reroll your accessories to better improve defense or damage output, or else practice the fights and use the knowledge before you.
Here are the Mechanical Bosses, what you need to craft their summoning item, and a bit of info about the items you can craft from defeating them. For in-depth strategies, please visit each Boss's Guide. Know that two out of three of these fights are much easier to accomplish if your character can fly, so getting wings should be a priority.
I'm listing the three bosses in order from easiest to hardest from my perspective on my first playthrough. Every one of these got me on the first try, but I later geared up and crafted the summoning items to take them out in order to unlock Plantera, which was much easier than The Twins thanks to a carefully prepared Arena and Hallowed gear.
Summoning & General Tips
Each of the bosses has a small chance to appear each night as soon as you're in Hard Mode, though Blood Moons are much more likely to occur. The items can be crafted using an Orichalcum/Mythril Anvil and all materials should be fairly easy to gather if you've explored your world. Use them at the beginning of nightfall and you can take the whole night to bring them down. Be forewarned that a loss will result in the Boss despawning and you'll need to try again.
The idea of summoning them to get a kill is that you control the circumstances, timing, and location of the fights. You can also summon them as many times as you like, so long as you farm the required materials for summoning items. During the fights, make liberal use of your buff potions - you do grow plants, right? If not, you're missing out on some powerful buffs that can greatly impact your hero's performance in combat. Also, for all fights but Destroyer, wings are a must for all but the best players.
Set up arenas for each fight that include a heart lantern and campfire. Both of these provide a buff that stack, increasing your health regeneration even when moving. At any point you are able to stand still, passive regeneration will double this and then some.
If you do not find yourself able to kill all three, consider farming the ones you're able to beat and going after a Halloawed Repeater (Bow), Excalibur, or Gungnir after mastering one of the fights. This in combination with the Hallowed Armor will do a lot to help shift the tide of battle to your favor.
Summoning Item: Mechanical Worm
Boss Intro
This large, snake-like tunnelling boss resembles the Eater of Worlds, which is a Corruption-specific boss some players may not have experienced when they reach Hard. It was the easiest of the three for me, once I was properly geared. It has gobs of health, but each of the segments it's made up of can take damage which is subtracted from the whole, meaning one sword swipe can hit it 3x or more.
Throughout the fight, the Destroyer will attempt to ram you and its massive body will cause damage on contact as it snakes through the ground. Melee is very doable, however - just gotta watch your step and not be too close to it if your armor is low. While it is tunnelling, it releases probes that fire lasers. Sounds tough, but with a proper arena set up and adequate defense, your regeneration combined with the probes' heart drops will let you focus down this abomination to get its incredibly useful loot.
The Destroyer drops Souls of Might, required to make the Megashark (an upgrade of the Minishark sold by the Arms Dealer). This rapid-fire ranged weapon can be incredibly helpful for fighting other bosses - The Twins in particular given their high mobility - but it's not necessary, it just makes fights easier if you haven't had any good ranged drops.
Being able to take out the Destroyer is all you need in order to succeed at the other two Mechanical Bosses of Terraria, because you will be able to make a Hallowed Armor set by using the Mechanical Worm to summon The Destroyer multiple times and take it down to farm the materials. Summoning Item: Mechanical Skull
Boss Intro
Talk to the old man at night to gain access to the dungeon by defeating Skeletron - who will be regular Skeletron even if you don't do this until after the Wall of Flesh. The dungeon is always on the side of the world opposite of the underground jungle, so you may notice you're going the wrong way. You need to do this in order to farm bones to create the Mechanical Skull.
The boss features four arms that each contain a different weapon, though the arms can be eliminated one by one. He will regularly charge at you, which can result in multiple hits and perhaps the largest damage of all the nasty things he does during the fight. Wings are helpful for jumping over this charge, though cloud in a bottle or rocket boots may suffice.
Upon eliminating the arms, Skeletron will spin his head and grow spikes, dealing massive damage on contact. He cools off in between uses, which leaves him open to attack. Vertical mobility is useful here, given his tendency to float upward. At that, it's easiest to fight him on the surface with wood platforms and a ranged weapon for this phase. Melee/spells work well earlier in the fight in order to take out the arms.
Defeating Skeletron Prime opens up your crafting options a bit and will likely let you work on your Hallowed set. Souls of Fright are not widely useful on their own, though they can be used to make a Flamethrower. Read the guide for more information and screenshots from one of my fights with him. Summoning Item: Mechanical Eye
The Twins were the hardest fight for me, though I eventually cracked the code and slaughtered them. The pair are connected by a vein and fly about the screen, cooperating to attack you with their respective weapons. Each of the two will go berserk when brought down to around half health, and deal higher damage while also having higher defense. Getting both berserk is asking for it unless your gear is godlike or you're a platformer prodigy, so the best solution is to take one of them out first by focusing on it.
Spazmatism fires a flame, Retinazer uses a laser. Retinazer is the best to take out first, given the threat of having a berserked flamethrower-wielding eye of Cthulu chasing you while another blasts you with lasers. Of all the fights, high mobility is most important here in order to avoid their charges.
Killing The Twins will let you make some magical items, even one that can summon a mini-set of Twins to fight for you (Optic Staff). This itself is fairly useful for the future, though a full set of Hallowed Armor should usually take priority. Read the Full Guide.
The three Mechanical Bosses are a major barrier to progress in Terraria's Hard Mode. If you can master even one of these three fights, you can farm the materials to get yourself a full set of Hallowed gear and upgraded weapons. Once one of these bosses is defeated, several things will happen of note:
