The Destroyer is one of three Mechanical Bosses in Terraria. Like all Hard Mode Mechanical Bosses, it may visit you at night randomly and you may get its unique summoning item from any kill so long as it hasn't been defeated yet. This Guide to defeating it will focus on what you need to prepare, how to get the components for the mechanical worm to summon him at will, and what you'll get when you destroy The Destroyer. Here is how you craft a mechanical worm:
Random Encounter Before Summoning
If you've not yet defeated this boss, there is a slim chance each night that it will spawn and attack you. The message for The Destroyer is "You feel vibrations from deep below..." .
Crafting Mechanical Worm
As with other Hard Mode bosses, once you have the required item crafted at your anvil, you can summon the destroyer at night time. I use my base for Skeletron Prime, but the Destroyer is a bit easier in a cave that is carved out. Here's my setup - far from perfect but delivered me victory:
Destroyer Stats
The Destroyer features 80,000 Life and has 30 Defense on its body segments - the part you'll hit most. Each segment counts as an independent entity, but the full amount of damage must be destroyed for it to be defeated.
Area or piercing damage is the key thing here. Each segment you hit deals damage to the boss's total health. Many weapons, such as swords, can hit multiple segments with a single swing, as can spells such as the Death Sickle (Demons in the Underworld pre-hardmode) and Shadowflame Hex Doll (from Goblin Summoners in Hard Mode). The Destroyer is pretty easy so long as you wear the highest armor gear available to you and put on the melee helmet (for max defense) and use an ironskin/regeneration potion if available.
The Destroyer will attempt to hit you with its head, but you must also realize where the tail will come out by its movement. Avoid both of these, and don't be silly and just stand on the segments - they do contact damage that can wear you down. Step off to the side, and try to hit probes where possible. This is why having a carved out area is so useful, as it provides room to maneuver.
With those things in mind, I don't consider this boss very hard unless you encounter him randomly early on in your Hard Mode adventures.
