Terraria: Eater of Worlds Boss Guide

Battle Tips & Gear Recommendations

The Eater of Worlds Corruption Boss is Summoned in Terraria The Eater of Worlds - Corruption-specific Boss in Terraria
Terraria Eater of Worlds BossLife: 7485
Drops: Demonite Ore, Shadow Scale, Mask (PC/Console), Trophy, 5% chance at pet.

Defeating the Eater of Worlds allows your character to make Shadow Armor and the Nightmare Pickaxe, which are both important steps in progressing through normal mode. This guide to preparing for, summoning, and defeating the boss should help you get past him, farm him if needed, and progress to tougher challenges like Skeletron and Queen Bee.

This is located in the Corruption (purple area) of your world, and is not available in Crimson worlds without creating an artificial biome. While the Shadow Armor set and Pickaxe are not as powerful as their Crimson counterparts, you do not have to fight enemies that are as difficult as those found in the Crimson. All players will find themselves on equal footing by the time they tackle Wall of Flesh, regardless, and the Shadow Gear is perfectly fine for taking on Queen Bee and Skeletron.

Preparation for the Eater of Worlds Boss Making sure there is an open area to fight the boss in is key here. It is very long, and you need room to maneuver. In this case, I did not want to have to fight it from water where my movement would be slowed, so I used wooden platforms on top of the water.

Preparing for the Fight
First, note the locations of Shadow Orbs in the area. You will need to smash 3 with a hammer to summon it, so plan the third break to be near an open area. If there is water - as there was in my unfortunate situation, a wooden platform to stand on without slowing your movement can be very helpful. As far as armor, you should have a set that gives you - at minimum - 12 armor. You can even mix and match Iron/Gold/Silver pieces to get this amount, possibly much more from your Accessories - that makes it a cakewalk. If you have at least 260+ life, it should not be a problem to have only 10-12. Otherwise, you need more armor. A weapon that can deal at least 17 damage to multiple parts (melee) is recommended. You can get the Light's Bane from defeating Eye of Cthulhu and its Demonite drops, and this is sufficient. Swords can hit multiple parts and area/piercing damage is what you want, and single target will leave you forced to whittle away its massive 7485 HP one hit at a time. That's no good.

Smash the Shadow Orb with a hammer to summon the boss. Every third will summon him. Smashing Shadow Orbs not only summons the boss (every 3), it also attracts Meteorites to your world. One will eventually hit, if not immediately!

Summoning Eater of Worlds
Eater of Worlds is summoned once every three Shadow Orbs you break with a hammer. You'll get some loot from doing so, while also allowing your world to spawn Meteorites. More orbs is more chance of Meteorites, and there is useful gear to be made from that. Remember what I said above and plan the third to be near an area suitable for fighting the boss, so that you can run there and engage it. Once you're out of Shadow Orbs, you need Rotten Chunks (15) and Vile Powder (30) to make Worm food at a Demon Altar. Get the Vile Powder from Vile Mushrooms found growing in the Corruption, then use them at an Alchemy Station to get 5 powder each.

Eater of Worlds is an easier fight than Brain of Cthulhu Eater is generally an easier fight than Brain of Cthulhu. Piercing is important for both of them. Hit multiple segments at once and the 7k+ life he has is not nearly as much as it seems.

The Fight
Eater of Worlds will come at you with its head. You can trick it into tunneling in such a way that there is room for you to stand next to it while it's coiling and swing away or cast your spells. Anything that can hit more than once is recommended. As you deal damage to the head or inner segments, a new head will grow. You can cut this guy in half enough that four or more Eaters are coming at you. The smaller ones seem a touch faster, but that might just be perception.

Defeating the Eater of Worlds Boss As you get closer to victory, more worms may spawn as new heads grow. The heads have less HP, so it can be a bit easier after that. Any mini-Eater that is down to just 3 parts will die when you destroy the next one.

Always stand close, and have a way out should it coil around you, resulting in contact damage. The head does the most, followed by the body. Thankfully, its armor is low. Each segment you destroy will provide you with Shadow Scales and Demonite Ore, so even a death is not a total loss. When you've defeated the last segment, the battle is over and you can return home to craft your Shadow Set.

Demonite and Shadow Scales can make some great early game armor, which can see on you to better things. You'll get more than enough Shadow Scale to make a Pickaxe, but may want to fight him twice to ensure you can get everything that Demonite has to offer.

What's Next?
After defeating Eater of Worlds, nothing special will happen. It's just a major stepping stone and the orbs' destruction allows Meteors to fall. When they do, you'll be in a great position to mine it with your new Pickaxe and Armor Set. You require the Shadow Scales to make a Nightmare Pickaxe which can mine Hellstone and Obsidian. The gear will also let you take out Queen Bee and Skeletron, which lead to better things, like the Bee Gun and the great loot found in the Dungeon.

Future Plans for the Guide

My Guide was started on Sept 23, 2015 and now includes dozens of pages about the game. I hope I can help newcomers to get a bit more enjoyment ouf of Terraria by demystifying some of how it works. You can provide feedback to me at [email protected]. I am tied up with multiple projects - this, The Sims 4, and Fallout 4 but do plan to return to Terraria and finish the boss guides and some other pages.
