Playing a ranged build is a safe style for players new to Terraria. All players have 4 arrow slots that can be populated with up to 999 arrows each, so all you need to get going is a bow. The game will pick the arrow in the topmost slot and work its way down as you run out. This guide will teach you to craft my two personal favorites. Frostburn and Jester's Arrows both have their strength, and shine as early-game ammunition for players who are new to Terraria. There is little reason to ever make flaming arrows with Frostburn dealing higher damage.
You will need
Making Normal Arrows
You are able to buy these from the merchant for 5 copper each, but it's easy to make a massive stack of them. Just have stone and wood in your inventory and visit a workbench. It takes 1 Stone and 1 Wood. PC players get 25 each time they craft them, while Console/Mobile get 5 - it may be better to just buy them from the merchant in that case, but it's up to you!
Making Frostburn Arrows
Deal 9 damage, but also sometimes apply a damage over time effect that deals 6 damage per second to the enemy for 4 seconds (24 damage). These are easiest of the two great pre-Hardmode Arrows to make in large quantities. Simply get together the other resources by chopping trees and killing Slimes, then visit a Snow Biome. Dig a bit deeper and you should be able to locate Ice Blocks. Mine at least a couple hundred of them, and you'll have what you need for a plentiful stock of ammo.
Crafting them is a three-step process. Make Torches out of Gel and Wood, then turn those into Ice Torches using your Ice Blocks. Now, you can use Ice Torches with your Wooden Arrows to make Frostburn Arrows. 10 Wooden Arrows and 1 Ice Torch makes 10 Frostburn Arrows. So you'd need 900 Wooden Arrows, 90 Torches, and 90 Ice Blocks to make 900 Frostburn Arrows.
Frostburn Arrows work on many of the pre-Hardmode bosses and beyond, though they do lose their strength as new arrow-types come available.
Making Jester's Arrows
Jester's Arrows deal 10 damage and will pierce enemies until they're stopped by terrain, and also go in a straight line while other arrows droop. They look really impressive in flight, as well. The piercing effect means they're better than Frostburn in battles with multiple foes. I prefer the former for boss fights, while the latter is good for any time you're able to line up a shot against multiple foes.
Make them by simply collecting Fallen Stars from the land at night time. Each time you get one, you're bagging 20 Jester's Arrows. You can make them anywhere, turning your normal Wooden Arrows into the Jester's.
