Skyrim - Thieves
Stealth Skills and Playing a Thief
There are six Stealth skills in Skyrim. Most will want to use at least the Alchemy and Lockpicking skills, although every skill here can be useful. Thieves need to invest in one of the three Combat skills that deal damage, or destruction magic in order to battle their opponents. The Warrior skills are the better choice for a Thief character as they do not rely on Magicka and can be used to score Sneak Attacks. This guide to playing a thief in Skyrim will link you to more information on each Stealth skill, which provides trainer locations, tips, and perk assessments. You can increase your experience gains in Stealth Skills 20% by using The Thief stone, one of three Guardian Stones near Riverwood in the beginning of the game.
Alchemy
Alchemy lets you identify herbs' magical properties and brew them into potions. This is a huge money maker in Skyrim and can make you rich very quickly with little effort. Potion effects can do the simple such as heal, or grant more powerful enhancements like increased one-handed damage or provide magical resistance.
Light Armor
Light Armor reduces damage while wearing this class of armor. You can take a number of perks to increase its effects and make your character more mobile. Light Armor can easily hit the armor cap with smithing and enchanting.
Lockpicking
Lockpicking lets you pick locks the most obvious skill. Its uses are many, from unlocking chests in dungeons without a key, to sneaking into a shop after hours to steal everything of value. A very useful skill for all adventurers, but particularly thieves.
Pickpocket
The most optional thief skill, pickpocket lets you steal directly from NPCs' inventories. This is great for making money, but it is not necessary for success. A purely thief skill that relies heavily on Sneak.
Sneak
Sneak lets you remain undetected by enemies, allowing you to slip by unnoticed or deliver potent sneak attacks. This is incredibly useful with a bow, as any character can stealth at range. It gets very powerful later, when you can sneak up behind an opponent and silently stab them for 15x damage with noone noticing.
Speech
Speech determines selling prices in shops, and comes into play frequently when doing quests. You can often persuade, intimidate, or bribe your way out of trouble or to get the information you seek. Speech will really vary up your gameplay on repeat playthroughs, as you may find solutions to problems much more peacefully and see different outcomes to a Quest story.
