Quest Start: Moira Brown - Craterside Supply, Megaton
Moira Brown offers you to help her to create a survival guide for those new to the wasteland. This Wasteland Survival Guide quest chain has some tutorial themes because completing it will help you to learn the game. Thus, I recommend you do this quest early on in your Fallout 3 experience. You will have three quests to choose from the start on the first chapter, there are a total of three chapters totalling nine quests. How you answer and whether you finished optional objectives determines the strength and type of perk you get at the end of this quest chain. I recommend you gain 50 Science as you gain levels from this quest because the third chapter has a quest that will be impossible to complete the optional part without 50 science. The breakdown is as follows:

  • The Normal Answer (first response) will give you a bonus to hit points, up to a maximum of fifteen.
  • Intelligence answers will grant you a bonus to science and medicine at the end, up to a bonus of +6 each
  • Endurance responses will lead to you getting a bonus in defense rating.
  • Snide, the last response in each of the missions will result in a critical chance increase, which is probably the best choice, second only to endurance.

    Chapter 1

    Get Irradiated
  • Contract 200 rads worth of radiation sickness
  • Optional: 600 rads worth of sickness.
The simplest way to complete this part is to head down to the bomb in Megaton and drink the water repeatedly until you hit 600. Head back up to Moira to receive a new park, Rad Regeneration, which allows you to regenerate your limbs when you are severely irradiated. This perk will see limited use, as having advanced radiation sickness is never a good thing. If you were in a dire situation with crippled limbs, no stimpacks and a lot of radaways you might use it on purpose, but I doubt it. Still, a perk is nice and you get three rad-x for completing the quest.

    Find Food

  • Find Food in the Super Duper Mart
  • Optional: Find medicine, as well
Moira will send you to the super-duper mart to find food and medical supplies. This quest will actually involve quite a bit of fighting, so you'd best bring ammo. Nothing is outrageously dangerous but as you can be doing this quest after just reaching the waste, it may be wise to grab some bullets from the craterside supply before you set out. When you reach the super duper mart, there will likely be some fighting. This is a fine opportunity to grab some free ammo and better armor. Inside the super duper mart, you'll find at least a half-dozen raiders. If you've cleared the place and can't find food in the super duper mart, look to the northeastern corner of the store to find a refrigerator with food inside. There is also a laser pistol to be found here for players who tagged the energy weapons skill. Look to the northwestern side of the store, behind a counter to find a key to a room in the southwest where you can find medicine (inside a first aid kit on the wall) and a protectron who can help you fight the raiders. To get inside, the key works or you can use 25+ science skill to hack the door. You should probably hack it anyway for the experience, if you can.

    Mine Field
Moira's third quest for you is to investigate the town of Minefield and make it to the playground there. This is the most challenging of these first three missions. Getting there will take longer than super duper mart, by far. It is not a difficult journey, however. You can push further north to cross the stream safely or walk through some water near the collapsed bridge. The radiation there is negligible. You will likely fight several battles along the way, but they are good for getting experience and loot. When you finally reach the town, the main thing you need to know is that you can disarm the mines by clicking them when you get in range. You must do it fast, however or the mine will detonate. You must see the mines to disarm them, and I found they were easier to spot at night time. There are several points of interest here. First is Gibson House, which contains a pair of pre-war books which you should hold on to for later. There are also other goodies to be found inside their home. Ignore the pre-war house model because it contains normal items despite the fact that it takes a 100 level in lock pick to open. You will be sniped as you approach the playground, which is just a bit past the gibson house on the left. If a car starts to smoke and flame all on its own, get away from it as it will explode then run toward the playground. When the quest is done, you can run about gathering more mines if you like then fast travel back to Megaton.
