Quest Start: Upon entering Big Town. You can discover it yourself or travel with Sticky from Little Lamplight on his 16th birthday.
  • Ask the people of Big Town about their captured friends
  • Rescue the Big Town captives (Red and Shorty) from the Super Mutants
Traveling with Sticky from Little Lamplight is not necessary at all. For one thing, the location of Big Town is not hard to find. It's one square west and four squares north of Megaton. The other thing is that Sticky is very annoying, and although you will learn about the customs of Little Lamplight (that is, kicking out inhabitants once they grow up), the quest doesn't actually give any rewards. Thus, if you want to skip the most annoying walk of your life, avoid doing the Little Lamplight quest and just walk to Big Town.

However you get there, once you reach Big Town, you'll be given a quest from the guard there. He will mention that Supermutants attack the city regularly, and have captured some of their friends. Your first task should be to gather some more information. Almost anyone you find will give you info. I found Sticky to be entertaining. Ask him where he thinks the Super Mutants took the captives and he'll mention the Germantown Police Station. Looks like that's your destination! The Germantown Police HQ is just west of Minefield, if you have that. If not the map should show you where it is, and you can walk the appropriate route. However you get there, the entrance is up some stairs on the Northern side of the building.

Inside, there are a few things that can be hacked or lockpicked, along with a plethora of skill books. Be sure to search this place thoroughly. Be on the lookout for mines as you go, as there are many here. You can certainly disarm them as you move along, gaining experience and potential caps for reselling them. If you like setting up mine fields for your enemies, you might find them to be useful in that way as well. Since you started on the top floor, you need to move your way down the levels toward the basement. Clear each floor for maximum loot and experience. On the ground floor, I found a Super Mutant Master that held the jailor's key. This is obviously useful. Red is found on the main floor ( be sure to rescue her first for fear of a bug), while Shorty is in the basement. Rescue each, and possibly give them an assault rifle or similar weapon that you got from the Super Mutants so they can defend themselves. You could make things easier on them by clearing the entire area before you set out, but it's up to you.

Once both captives are rescued, return to Big Town. Talk to Red and choose whether you want a reward. Tell her that you can help with the Super Mutant threat one way or another. Multiple dialog options may appear, including setting a mine field and arming the citizens with guns. It's entirely dependent on your skills. All forms are useful, and probably more so than you actually taking them all down yourself. Once you choose one, the townsfolk will all rally around a point to discuss the plan. Accompany them. I taught them to use small guns, and when we reached the meeting point I had to fire my gun at the bottles and things set up for target practice. Only after doing this did it trigger them training. The mutant attack will only come near nightfall, so try to time all this so that it's near dusk. Protect the villagers as best you can, and when you're done talk to Red. Big Trouble in Big Town will be complete.

With the quest done, head to the Clinic in town and use 40 medicine skill, if you have it, to revive Timebomb. He'll give you his lucky 8 ball and a permenant +1 luck bonus!
